NLG Supports Berkeley Tree Sitters

Unlawful Arrests, Reckless Tactics Used Against Peaceful Activists

Berkeley – The National Lawyers Guild San Francisco Bay Area Chapter (NLGSF) condemns the irresponsible and dangerous actions of the University of California Berkeley and campus police against the peaceful tree-sitters and their supporters.

The tree-sit will celebrate its one year campaign anniversary on December 2, and the NLGSF will host a press conference at 11:30 a.m. on that day at the Memorial Grove. Speakers will include Attorneys Dennis Cunningham, Hunter Pyle, Tony Serra, and Carol Strickman.

Protest in Solidarity with Pakistani Attorneys

NLG Strongly Condemns State of Emergency in Pakistan

The National Lawyers Guild strongly condemns the State of Emergency imposed on the people of Pakistan and the attacks on lawyers and the judiciary. The NLG demands that President Musharraf immediately withdraw the emergency declaration of November 3, 2007, the Provisional Constitutional Order No. 1 of 2007 (PCO), which suspends Pakistan's Constitution. This declaration includes suspension of the right to life and liberty, freedom of speech, assembly and association, and equal protection of the law, all of which are guaranteed by the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

Charges Dropped in 20-Year-Old Deportation Case Against Palestinian Activists

Los Angeles: The 20-year effort to deport two men over their alleged political support of Palestinian self-determination officially came to an end today when the nation's highest administrative body overseeing immigration cases dismissed all charges against Khader Hamide and Michel Shehadeh, members of a group of Palestinian student activists arrested in January 1987, who became known as the LA8.
