Dedicated to the need for basic change in the structure of our political and economic systems, the National Lawyers Guild seeks to unite lawyers, law students, legal workers and jailhouse lawyers of America to function as an effective political and social force in the service of the people, to the end that human rights will be more sacred than property rights.
For over 80 years, the National Lawyers Guild has served as the legal arm of movements leading the fight for meaningful social change in the United States. As a progressive and leftist legal organization, the NLG has represented and defended activists in the courtrooms and on the streets, and has helped free hundreds - if not thousands - of activists from the clutches of the courts and prison system.
In these highly charged political times, the work of the Guild has never been more urgent. From attacks on our most marginalized communities to an escalating effort to suppress dissent - the need for progressive resistance - and protections for those who choose to resist - is dire.
The San Francisco / Bay Area Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild (NLGSF) has met this need and supported the resurgence of local social movements demanding racial and economic justice. Our chapter plays a significant role in much of this work, leading police and immigration reform litigation, defending activists arrested for First Amendment activities, serving as Green Hats in the streets and engaging in international human rights work. Although the Bay Area is full of progressive legal organizations, local activists continue to look to NLGSF lawyers for legal defense, impact litigation and street support. We are often called on to lend our expertise to other cities across the country as well.
