The date of our Testimonial Dinner, April 27th, was declared Walter Riley Day by the Oakland City Council. That evening, our chapter honored Riley as our Champion of Justice for 2013. Also honored were Carey Lamprecht as Unsung Hero, and the Haiti Emergency Relief Fund as Partners in Liberation.
It was a marathon event for our chapter. Well over 400 attended the Dinner, while an additional 100 came just for the benefit show with Boots Riley and The Coup. Guests arrived just before 5:30 p.m. and the benefit show continued until 11:30 p.m., with fans and friends lingering until past midnight.
Speakers included author Rebecca Solnit, Haiti activist Pierre Labossiere, NLG national president Azadeh Shahshahani and State Senator Bill Monning.
Guests included actor and activist Danny Glover, and former Minister of Culture for the Black Panther Party, Emory Douglas.
The evening was exciting, political, and entertaining. It was a night that we won’t soon forget.
