The National Lawyers Guild San Francisco Bay Area chapter is excited to announce the release of our updated 2013 Transgender Know Your Rights manuals. The manuals include information about individual rights in the fields of criminal, employment, housing, and immigration law, with a particular focus on the transgender community. Specific attention is paid to laws that effect transgender individuals in the San Francisco Bay Area, and California at large. Compiled by Thomas Steel Interns and staff of the National Lawyers Guild, the manuals are designed to be accessible to the general public.

Significant updates in this edition include changes in immigration law following the Supreme Court’s decision in Windsor v. United States, and new EEOC guidance in Macy v. Holder that discrimination against transgender employees violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. Recent changes to San Francisco policies on condoms as evidence in prostitution cases, coverage of sex reassignment surgeries for the uninsured, and California laws on immigrants’ rights are also included. Each manual also includes an updated list of legal and advocacy service organizations that serve transgender individuals in the Bay Area, California, and nationwide.
