Solitary Confinement: Is it Torture?

July 16, 2012

In July 2011, over 6600 prisoners went on hunger strike to protest the conditions and policies surrounding the use of solitary confinement in California’s state prisons. The Prison Hunger Strike Solidarity Coalition invites you to a discussion with folks who’ve been engaged with this issue on multiple fronts.

Marjorie Cohn is a Professor at Thomas Jefferson School of Law and past president of the National Lawyers Guild.

Our chapter Executive Board meetings are generally held every first Wednesday of the month 2nd Wednesday in July because of the July 4th holiday, alternating between the East Bay and San Francisco. The board governs the chapter and is elected by the Bay Area membership. Any current member may attend with an RSVP, though only board members may vote. There has been a lively debate among the chapter's Executive Board members and by others online regarding whether the chapter should take a position on the matter of San Francisco's suspended sheriff Ross Mirkarimi, and if so, what that position should be. The purpose of this membership meeting (open to all chapter members in good standing) is to further discuss some of the issues underlying the debate and to hear from knowledgeable presenters.

May Day TUPOCC Party

The United People of Color Caucus (TUPOCC) of the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) will host a party and fundraiser in honor of May Day 2012 and in commemoration of what is known as International Workers Day. The event will feature musicians, performers, and artists on the theme of May Day, decolonization, racial justice, immigrants' rights, and worker justice.
