Longtime NLG member Lynne Stewart was targeted and imprisoned for her zealous representation of poor and unpopular clients. Federal prosecutors demonized her to win a conviction and then fought for a longer sentence than the court was initially willing to give. Once in prison and suffering from cancer, the Justice Department continued to fight against compassionate release. Finally, after years of protests and legal maneuvering, Lynne is out of prison and is receiving the treatment she needs.
