Law Students: Become a GI Right Counselor!

Volunteer with the GI Rights Hotline! The GI Rights Hotline provides information to service members, and veterans, on discharges, grievance and complaint procedures, and other civil rights issues. The Hotline is staffed by a consortium of 18 non-profit organizations across the U.S. and Germany. In San Francisco, it is staffed by volunteers affiliated with the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC).

Chapter Executive Board Meeting

The Bay Area Chapter's Executive Board generally meets the first Wednesday of each month, 6:30 p.m. Due to the national convention, however, our September meeting will be the 2nd Wednesday, September 10, 50 California Street, 34th Floor in San Francisco. Meetings are open to all members in good standing.

Bay Area Military Law Panel Meeting

September 10, 2014

The next Bay Area Military Law Panel meeting will be held on Wednesday, September, 10, 2014, at 6:30 p.m. in the upstairs conference room at the American Friends Service Committee office. The program will be presented by Protect Our Defenders.

Protect Our Defenders is dedicated to ending the epidemic of sexual assaults in the military. They will present a report on their advocacy work and programs to support servicemembers who have been assaulted, raped or harassed.

After the program, there will be a discussion of active cases and issues.

East Bay Immigration Happy Hour!

September 9, 2014

Social Justice Collaborative (SJC) and the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) Immigration Committee are co-hosting a Happy Hour for immigration advocates in Oakland at SomaR on September 9th from 6-9pm.

Come mix and mingle with East Bay immigration attorneys, students/interns, and organizers! Find out what other practitioners and groups are doing in Oakland and how we can work on common projects, provide mentorship, and just get to know each other better!

Inspired by the CLEs that David Borgen and Doug Chermak have done over the past few years, a group of NLG members has started a meditation group specifically for progressive attorneys, legal workers, and law students. The group is meeting from 8:15-9:00 am on the first Wednesday of each month, and from 5:15-6:00 pm on the third Wednesday of the month, at Sundeen Salinas & Pyle, 428 13th Street, 8th Floor, in Oakland.

Labor & Employment Committee Meeting

Our next NLG Labor & Employment Committee meeting will be Tuesday, 29 July, 6:30pm, at 483 9th St Ste 200.

We are very excited to have as a guest speaker the Honorable Alameda County Superior Court Judge John True. Judge True has been a long term NLG member and litigated for many years, at Leonard Carder, the Legal Aid Society Employment Law Center, and later his own firm, in support of workers' rights before becoming a Superior Court Judge. Come and listen to his experiences and ask questions!
